Astute educationist, Mr. Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan, the new Head Of Nigeria National Office, has pledged to run an all-inclusive-system of administration for the next four years that his tenure would last as the helmsman of the Council in Nigeria.
The new HNO made the pledge while delivering his maiden speech at the 68th WAEC Day celebration on Monday, March 16, 2020.
The elated HNO expressed deep gratitude to the staff and management, especially the members and executives of the Senior Staff (SSA) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the Council for their cooperation and the spirit of unity and collective commitment that had kept the flag of the Council flying high since its birth on March 16, 1952, to date.
“On behalf of the Registrar to Council and Management of the Nigeria National Office, I am pleasantly delighted to welcome you to the occasion of the celebration of the 68th Anniversary of The West African Examinations Council.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that this is my maiden WAEC day celebration, having just assumed the mantle of leadership as Head of National Office, WAEC, Nigeria.
Let me seize the opportunity of this celebration to thank you, the Staff of the Council in Nigeria, for your support in my emergence as the new Head of the National Office.
“I want to assure you of my desire and readiness to carry everybody along in the discharge of my duties and responsibilities as the Head of National Office.
“The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is one of Nigeria’s – and indeed West Africa’s – most enduring institutions. WAEC remains the only colonial institution to have survived the centrifugal forces of the post-independence era in the West African sub-region.
“The 16th of March each year is usually set aside for the celebration of the birth of WAEC and it is 68 years old today, having come into existence in 1952.
“In the last 68 years, the Council has played an important role in the educational sector of Nigeria and the sub-region at large. It has recorded significant landmarks on the educational, economic and social landscape of the country; ensuring sustainable human capital development that has impacted positively on national development.
It can be safely said that WAEC has fulfilled its core mandate over the years.
“Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, the Council’s achievements over the years could not have been possible without the support and cooperation of the governments at various levels in Nigeria; our dedicated staff and other stakeholders.
“It is the intention of the present Administration to build on the achievements of the immediate past Administration, improve on them and also implement new ideas and programmes/projects that will enhance the services of the Council to its stakeholders.
“We shall strive to bring about more technological innovations in the conduct of examinations, generation of income, relationship with stakeholders, provision and improvement of working tools/environment, Management-Staff relations, promotion of industrial harmony, etc. The promotion of staff welfare shall be our main focus. I shall endeavour to practice the open-door policy.
“In this wise, I enjoin you all to bring up useful ideas to make these dreams realizable.”, Areghan pledged.
While promising to put to test creative ideas and contributions from staff, the new HNO enjoined them to use their unions as a vehicle to assist the management to achieve its aim and objective of becoming the foremost examining body in the world.
“My dear colleagues, moving WAEC to the next level is a task that can be done through our collective efforts. The Council belongs to all of us. I strongly appeal to you all: let’s do it together.”; Areghan admonished the Council workforce.
